The importance of the spine can really not be overemphasized. It is the information superhighway of the body, passing all the information your organs and cells need in order to know what to do next. Any dysfunction anywhere along this highway can have serious implications for your health. The idea behind chiropractic care is that when this route is clear, the body knows how to heal itself. If the messages get through, there is a plan in place. To make that path clear, chiropractors eliminate subluxations (misaligned vertebrae) through spinal adjustments. With that in mind, here are some of the main benefits of chiropractic care.
Numerous studies show that chiropractic care is effective at reducing pain. People often come to chiropractors with neck and lower back pain due to lifestyle problems like stress and bad posture. In one study by the National Institute of Health, 57 percent of those who saw a chiropractor experienced pain reduction of 75 percent or greater. Only 33 percent of those who took medication instead saw this level of relief.
Headaches are a common issue treated by chiropractors. Whether it is a tension or a migraine headache, chiropractic care is proven to reduce attacks dramatically. About a quarter of patients in one large study saw their symptoms reduced by 90 percent while half saw the intensity of their headache symptoms “significantly reduced.”
Blood Pressure Reduction
High blood pressure, also known as hypertension, is an epidemic in the United States. While poor diet and lack of exercise contribute, subluxation is another major cause. Treatment with spinal adjustment has been shown to reduce high blood pressure. In the Human Hypertension Journal, hypertension guru George Bakris, found that the positive effects of a single adjustment lasts six months and was as effective as taking two blood pressure medications simultaneously.
Those who have been treated by a chiropractor with regular adjustments report lower stress levels. Sleep also improves for patients, which may be due to the reduction of pain, the stress relief or both. What’s interesting is that stress can cause subluxations but it seems that fixing subluxations can improve stress.
The word holistic is used for many treatments today, but that is because it is important to take a look at the entire person. It’s not always clear why someone might be in pain or be showing the symptoms that they are and a chiropractor is great at diagnosing causes other doctors may have overlooked. Nutrition, stress, sleep and other factors are quite often part of a chiropractic office’s expertise. West Cary Wellness has expertise in these areas in addition to our chiropractic services.
